Earliest traces of symbolic culture in America

Carved bear in bone is one of the oldest known symbolic items in Europe and one of the earliest to be associated with Neanderthals.

Some of the earliest traces of symbolic culture in North America include:

 * Modified bone tools: Archaeologists have found evidence of purposefully modified bone tools dating back over 13,000 years. These tools, often carved with geometric designs or featuring engravings, suggest a level of symbolic thought beyond simple functionality.

 * Non-utilitarian objects: Objects like carved mammoth ivory figurines or drilled seashells found at archaeological sites indicate the creation of items that served a symbolic purpose rather than a practical one.

 * Cave paintings: While not as widespread as in Europe, there are examples of cave paintings in North America, particularly in the southwest regions. These paintings, often depicting animals or geometric designs, may have held cultural or religious significance.

 * Beads and personal ornaments: The creation of shell, bone, or stone beads for personal adornment suggests a concern for aesthetics and potentially social status beyond basic survival needs.
